The recent past - Super Bowl XLII

The improbable became reality at University of Phoenix Stadium, as the Giants completed one of the most remarkable playoff runs in NFL history with an upset of the previously unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. NFL GameDay recalls what will go down as one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played.

Super Bowl - The history

The Super Bowl is the most important Championship game in professional football in America. This is the championship game created and sponsored by the National Football League or the NFL.

It has over the past few years become the number one broadcast in the span of the year to be aired and viewed by Americans.  It is so famous that many admired and respected musicians, actors and singers have performed for the opening, pre-game as well as half-time events.

The first Super Bowl game to be ever held was played on the 15th of January in the year 1967, which was part of the agreement between the National Football League and the American Football League, its competitor. Here each league’s most favoured team would play that of the opponents in the first ever “AFL – NFL World Championship Game.” Following these annual games, there was an alliance made in the year 1970 between the two and they merged to form what is the Super Bowl – where the two Conferences – the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference play the most watched television broadcast ever.

As the season for the National Football League spans  a whole year and into the next year, the Super Bowl organizers have started using Roman Numerals as a source of identification for the Super Bowl played.

Due to the popularity of this event the United States’ Secret Service and a few other regulatory and supervisory bodies of the American Government have found it of utmost importance to ensure that every year the security levels are boosted up by a few notches with the passing of every Super Bowl. This is because over the years it has been observed that these stadiums – those of Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, etc seem to be likely targets for security breaches and attacks, especially after the 9/11 attacks.

Earlier, in the initial stages of the Super Bowl the organizers had local college bands marching to pass the half time etc, but gaining popularity the Super Bowl has now managed to get top singers, performers, actors to be part of the various festivities that are being held including the now eagerly watched Super Bowl half-time show - an entertainment event all its own.

Some of these performers have left a large impact on the humane side of the game – in the year 2002 when U2 performed in the half time – they sang “Where the streets have no name” under a large banner  projecting the names of all the victims of 9 /11

The Super Bowl is the very definition of true American Football. It is the only sport that lives inside each and every single American, regardless of gender! Super Bowl is one of the sports events that not only appeal to men, but also to women and children. Super Bowl is by far the largest commercialized sport that there is that has maintained its true spirit over the years, even though it is the largest and most watched and celebrated sporting event in the whole of America.

The spirit, determination and enthusiasm of not only the players but also the viewership are not only fantastic but also constantly growing.
